One way to hwlp your kids get interested in scout skills and set a goal
is to hold a troop adventure race.
Start planning it now for Sept. or Oct.. Phase one is set a date.
Phase 2 plan the coarse.(ie. orienteering, lashings, archer, rappeling
etc.) The one we did two years ago we had at Bear Creek Scout
reservation in Kerrville, Tx. We had the boys do a compass coarse to
find thier bikes then they had to finish the coarse to find their
lunches at the top of Rickenbacher,
from there they had to go all the way across the camp to archery.
After they finished they had to go to the river and design and lash a
raft ( i forget the situation we set up for the raft but it was
something about getting supplies across to aid flood victims) finally
they went rappelling.
We divided the boys into three teams of 4 or 5. and the fastest team
completing the coarse won small trophies and a pizza dinner before the
Phase three is to work on the scout skills needed for the race. Not only
will they learn some of their scout skills the also learn team work.
I hope this helps
