scouts-l Mail Archive for April of 2000: Teaching First Aid
Wed Apr 05 2000 - 07:28:16 CDT
I am going to be teaching the First Aid requirements for Tenderfoot,
Second Class & First Class at the end of April. It will be a 3 hour
Does anyone have any experience with this? What works?
What doesn't work?
1) Get a few boys who are working on the First Aid MB to help--- one of their
reqs is to teach a first aid skill to another Scout. Have them let you know
what they want to teach, how they plan to do it, and how they will know their
learners "got" the material.
2) If you have enough kids, do a stretcher race at some point to wake 'em up.
Use senior Scouts as "victims," which adds to the fun & prevents the
"smallest body for rescue" syndrome.
3) Make sure they read up on the stuff FIRST.
4) I'm not sure about teaching all the Tfoot, 2nd, and 1st stuff all at once
on the same day. Give them some time to let it settle in. Ask the PLC if you
can do first aid games/relays/skill races as preopenings to practice a few
things before moving on to the next set.
