Hello to everyone on the list!
First off, I would like to say that I have subscribed to this list a
few weeks ago and have posted questions and answered questions to the
list already but mostly have been a silent observer.
I forgot to give a brief introduction of myself when I first joined so
here it is.
My name is Chris Stone and have been Scoutmaster of Troop 25 from
Madison, NJ for nine years now. I was volunteered for the job and have
absolutely no complaints. I enjoy working with the boys and enjoy the
outdoors and get to pass down some of the skills I learned as a Scout.
I have no kids of my own and am single. I signed on as a leader as a
promise I made to my younger brother to get him to continue on from Cub
Scouts into Boy Scouts. He is now in the military and uses his
leadership skill that he learned in Scouting and I'm still playing in
Our troop is 70 years old this year! But, it has basically been rebuilt
during my nine year tenure. Five years ago membership was down to just
six Scouts and in trouble of possibly folding. The Scouts at the time
were all new Scouts so basically it was like starting a new troop. The
Scouts did not want the troop to fold so they put together an
outstanding recruiting drive and got their parents involved. Today we
have a membership of 37 and we are growing at about 5 to 10 Scouts per
Our problem is in the first three years during the rebuild the troop was
mostly adult run. We had a SPL and as we got bigger, started to have
Patrols. Two years ago we were able to send our first Scouts to JLT as
our Council has an age requirement to attend. WE have since had three
Scouts attend. One just as a participant, one as a participant then a
staff member, the other a participant, then staff then NJLIC and staff
and this year he will staff NJLIC. We are starting to turn around to a
boy-run program but it is slow.
Our committee met tonight to discuss how we can all work together to
make that happen. Many ideas were discussed and some areas need work.
Other units I have talked to have said it took their troops about five
years to finally become totally boy-run so I know it won't happen
In the near future I will be posting questions as to how other troops do
certain things. I will check the archives so as not to burden the list
with things already discussed. I have already had answers to some
questions just by reading so I believe some of the other questions we
have will probably be of interest to the list.
If I ask a question that has already been worn out it is probably
because I used the wrong keywords in the archives. Please let me know
what the right keyword is so we can move on to more important topics.
Thanks for listening to my story and thanks in advance for being the
helpful Scouters that you have been and will continue to be.
Chris Stone :-)
