I beleive that the medal itself is changing, the illustration in the new
(2000 printings) show a different medal. It seems that the middle (red white
and blue) is a bit larger and the brass section with "for saving life" is
now narrower and possibly in color as well. This is based on my memory of
looking in new books (I think the advancement comm. book, but I am not sure)
and in the newer style of printing in 3 colors, in this case
I think, just as the Eagle medal, national may recast the dies as they get
old, and this may be what happend in 5/99 as referred to in the auction.
