Troop 30 out of Houston (did I tell you, celebrating 75 years?) leaves at
8:30am Saturday morning, except for our week at Summer camp or Camporee and
our annual August trip to Galveston beach. We do this for several reasons.
Several of our SA's are linemen for the telephone company and work overtime
on weekdays and thus can't get off in time and we impress the Scouts to get
their homework done or started on Friday night because they won't have much
time on Sunday. Aslo most of our boys in Senior sports do so on Friday night.
We return on Sunday between 3 and 5 because the Church parking lot is cleared
out so we can manuver the trailer, etc.
Camporees generaly require us to leave on Friday at 6pm, Philmont depends
upon the Trek dates and we leave on Friday evening for our Galveston beach
campout and return late Saturday because most of the scouts stay up all night
on the beach (under supervision!) and the sun is too hot for a 2 day campout
for most of us.
In reading the replies I believe there is no wrong or right but just what
works for your group. As stated some groups-LDS, Catholic scouts involved as
Alter servers, etc, may need to head home early. Make the program fit the
needs of the scouts.
