scouts-l Mail Archive for March of 2000: Wilderness First AId-- Cape Cod
Wed Mar 22 2000 - 15:49:48 CST
I am putting this up on Scouts-L in hopes of reaching Scouters who would be
interested in a weekend Wilderness First Aid course taught by the estimable
gang at Stonehearth Outdoor Learning opportunities (SOLO) of Conway, NH at
beautiful BSA Camp Greenough, Cape Cod & Islands Council, on August 26, 27,
Taught with humor, skill, and inventiveness, this class teaches what you need
to know when conventional aid is more than a few hours away. Group sessions
are complemented by frequent trips to the outdoors, where learners taking
their turns as moulage-encrusted "victims" can be found moaning, bruised, and
broken all over camp. You'll learn personal preparedness, assessment, and
care for specific injuries, improvisation trechniques for what's in your
backpacking gear (or your victim's, since it's his fault he's hurt <G>),
skills enabling you to provide longterm care in an outdoor environment, and
Learners should be at least age 16. Plan to camp at Greenough for the weekend
and bring your own food, cooking gear, camping gear, etc. Your backpacking
gear can be used (but will not be damaged) in the classes. You'll need the
usual BSA health form-- Class 3 if age 40+, class 1/2 if 16-39. This is a
nonsmoking venue and class.
Cost is $80 in-Council, $90 out-of-Council-- which is a pretty darn good
deal, includes all materials & certificate. CLASS SIZE IS LIMITED TO 30 so
get back to me soon--- first paid, first on the list. Due to space & time
constraints I can't deal with cancellations but you can transfer your spot if
you need to. Send me a check, post-dated to June 1 if you like, to:
