I will have to disagree with Major Mike on this one..at least in practice
they cannot bar you from a meeting location which belongs to a chartered
organization, nor can they bar you from an activity with a unit belonging
a chartered organization."
A few years ago our Scoutmaster ( 3Beader,Silver Beaver, Vigal, etc etc)
was called into our council office and summarily dismissed from Scouting
by our "EXE" and only told that a serious charge against him had been
made. Repeated requests by him to hear the accusation so he could reply
were denied, as were appeals to Regional and National. Our Troop
Commitiee, and many of us as individuals attempted to pressure all levels
into at least informing him of the charges against him...to no avail.
They claim they don't have to tell you anything...they can just show you
the door and you can't do squat about it.
We had a major confrontational meeting with out council Exe, and after a
lot of hem-hawing, he agreed that the BSA could not bar our former
Scoutmaster from troop activities and especially from Eagle COH's when
the boys invited him. After a few COH's, the council told us that if
this individual ( an invited guest at the church, NOT wearing a uniform,
or speaking as anyone but a citizen) EVER so much as even set foot in the
building during a Scout meeting or activity, our CHARTER WOULD BE
REVOKED!... THat is an exact quote. Now, we are the second biggest unit
in our council, with more than 100 youth and over 45 adults registered,
members of which occupy a huge amount of District positions, woodbadge
staffs, special events..etc....and they threatened to revoke our charter
because a private citizen attend our activities.
Alas, the majority of our TC was afraid of the pros, so they folded and
told our former SM to, in effect, take a hike. I was never so ashamed of
the BSA, or our troop as that moment.
Itmay well be that the RULES say they can't do anything but revoke a
membership...but trust me Mike, and others...when a Council Executive
gets it in for a volunteer, they can do whatever they want, and the folks
at regional and national dont give a damn about truth, fairness, law, or
the SO and SL>
If I seem bitter...you bet I am..my best friend in the world had his life
nearly destroyed by an accusation that he never even got to hear, much
less respond to. People often commit suicide when their world turns
upside down, this gentleman had to leave town and move to avoid the shame
and the incredible pain he experienced in having the most dear thing to
him in the world after his kids ripped away from him.
Forget about appeals to national and regional...they are a joke. If your
council meets its FOS goals...the Council exe is believed no matter how
outrageously he lies..about anything. I am sure there are Exe's and
other Pros out there that arent the scum of the earth....but they dont
live or work here!!!
The lesson to learn is....it doesnt matter about ANYTHING you do, say, or
feel...the OPINION of the Council EXE is the last word...you aint getting
help from nobody up the chain of command.
I still participate fully in the troop and crew....and on our district
Venturing committie...but they are never getting me to do squat for the
pros untill they clean house here.
