scouts-l Mail Archive for March of 2000: Snow cave deaths
Tue Mar 21 2000 - 09:16:49 CST
This past weekend, two young men died when their snow cave collapsed during
the night in Stratford Vt. Since I regularly take boys out for a "Winter
Trek", which sometimes involves camping in snow caves, I was a bit concerned
when I read the story. Mostly, I'm looking for an answer when, in the
future, some parents who also heard this story ask why it happened and how
do I keep it from happening to their sons.
By now you may have read the followup--- the boys built their cave in the
pile of snow next to the parking lot, and the next morning the front-end
loader came along and dumped a lot more snow on top of it, this collapsing it.
A regular quinzee has walls about a foot thick, so even if it collapsed it
would be an easy matter to get out. This was one of those big piles of snow
you see, well, next to parking lots. The front-end-loader driver is not being
charged-- how the heck would he know? Tragic accident.
