We use 5 ASPL's in our troop and here is why. We have a rather large troop with about 90 - 100 scouts. Each patrol has the standard 7 - 8 which gives us about 12 patrols. The troop is divided into 4 squads with 3 patrols per squad. A1 is patrol one of squad A. C3 is patrol three of the C squad.
Each squad has two adults known as Squad Leaders which are actually just ASM's. There is an ASPL assigned to each squad which makes up 4 of them. We then have just one ASPL who acts as the main ASPL under the SPL. The system works very well and the work gets delegated fairly.
By having many ASPL's for our troop, each is asked to only manage 3 patrols and this also gives more scouts experiance as they may want to become the SPL someday.
