There is a Scoutmasters' minute of mine that I drag out at least once a
year. It's jist is that while we should always apologize for being rude,
nasty, or uncharitable, rarely, if ever, (never say never) should we
apologize for being passionate about something good. Here on Scouts-L we
come to talk about the good called Scouting, and most of us, if not all, are
passionate about Scouting. We're passionate because we care, and because we
know how much it means to us, and more importantly how much it means to the
boys whose lives we have touched through it. No, it's not a religion, and
shouldn't be, but, the passion it ignites is truly God given and is what
drives so many of us.
So, when someone suggests that we must lighten-up, I can only smile and say,
not a chance! Yes, its seems that many of us, cannot be budged from our
positions on a variety of subjects ,and, often we are at polar opposites on
an issue. But, never for a moment think that the vast majority don't at
least listen to each other, and, maybe, just maybe, learn a thing or two and
yes, occasionally, change our minds about something! There are also the
uncounted majority of people (I suspect) who subscribe to this list and
rarely, if ever, post. They are listening and listening hard. Most of us
will never know the influence these discussions have on them.
I'll leave you with the thought that Scouting is a lot like climbing a
mountain. There are many paths to the top, choose one, put all you can into
the climb; if you meet an obstacle, or come to a dead end, go around it,
climb over it, or maybe even go down a bit and try another path. If you
don't give up you will reach your goal no matter what exact path you take.
I'll see you all up there on top!
