I have to wonder why you'd be responding to the SM. You're not
considering becoming the UC for your son's troop, are you? That subject was
discussed recently on Scouts-L and it's a recipe for disaster; it will be
almost impossible for you to remain objective and impartial if you have ties
to the unit(s) you're working with. I've remained on the committee for the
troop where my son was a Scout, but I go into meetings with a completely
different attitude there than I do any of the units I serve as commissioner.
But my experiences as a commissioner? Wouldn't trade this job for all the
tea in China. I enjoy working with the adults in my various units and
watching their boys grow and mature. I can see the positive effects that
Scouting has on people because I'm watching from a distance, so to speak.
And having been an SA in one of the best boy-run units in the district, I can
see now how well the SM was training me to carry out my duties. Now I can
pass that on to other leaders. It's like planting a seed and watching it
grow into a beautiful flower.
