Hey, Bob! You triggered my creative juices this AM with the mention of all
the "facts" that you were told when you took over as SM. Same here! And a
lot of these were spread by people who had been in Scouting for years, were
Wood Badge trained (no flame intended here, folks), and whom I considered
as an expert, as far as Scouting goes.
Here's some I have found to be thought of as "facts" as since joing this
list and getting trained (still, no guarantee) have found otherwise:
#1 Myth: A Scout must be First Class in order to start working
on a MB.
#2 Myth: A Scout must complete said MB in one year.
#3 Myth: There must be two adults with a Scout at all times. One
leader and two Scouts or vice versa is illegal.
I could go on here, but will let members of the list fill in their best
myths and "facts". Thanks for the great idea, Bob!
SM - Troop 67
>Amongst the things I "heard" about Scouting when I took over as SM were:
>1) No troop water activities unless 2 BSA certified Lifeguards present!
>2) You must not even contact the 2nd year WEBLOS and solicit their
>membership until they crossed over
>3) Crossover from Cubs to Scouts was in June!
>4) There is a 6 month limit on completing all Merit Badges.
>5) Local Tour permits were required for in council trips.
>6) The SM and committee decided activities without input from scouts.
>The list goes on and on.
