One of our Scouts is allergic to all corn products.
We know we have to bring backpacking food for him
from home but we don't know where to by such items
that don't have corn products (corn syrup, corn meal,
etc.) in them. If any of you have been through this
situation before and can offer some help it would be
greatly appreciated as we are set to depart June 26,
I too am allergic to all corn products and by
products. It is a royal pain to develop such an
allergy in my 40's! I have discovered that most mixes
(including soup, Hamburger Helper, etc) include some
form of corn. I've learned that corn is disguised on
ingredient listings under such names as dextrose. In
fact, my allergist told me to stay away from anything
that ended in ose. MSG has corn by products in it. I
had to learn to use non-iodized salt because the
iodized type has corn in it!
I buy some of my food from health food stores. If you
have a Trader Joe's Store near you, they have been
great at working with me to find foods that don't
contain corn in any form, and their prices are
reasonable. But mostly I cook my own food, purchased
from the grocery store. I just have to make it the
old fashioned way, from scratch instead of using
mixes, and I have to VERY carefully read labels.
If I can be of any further assistance, please don't
hesitate to contact me.
