A few weeks ago I reported on a scout that quit and asked for help in
getting him back. Following some of the advice I got here, I called him to
find out where he did have fun. I invited him to our next two camp outs
and worked to get his friends to invite him to come. I also remembered how
much fun he had at summer camp and convinced him that if he did nothing
else to try summer camp again. He thought summer camp was a great idea.
This past weekend he showed up for our fund raiser and had a great time.
Last night we had patrol elections. As a reward for returning, he was
elected Patrol Leader. (There were a few dissenters in the patrol.) I
think it is great. The troop guide is concerned that the patrol elected a
scout who had not shown up very much all year, or done much when he was
around. I told the guide that the patrol wants him, and this may keep the
boy around and finally get him working with the patrol. Besides, the APL
has the full support of the patrol and is very capable of stepping in when
Strange surprises happen all of the time in scouting. And all it took was
one little phone call.
