scouts-l Mail Archive for March of 2000: Notification before Awards Dinner

Most councils around me have gone to announcing ahead of time who would be a
Beaver recipient. After the few times where there has been less than
acceptable responses (and usually not complaints, but physical problems
brought on by the surprise, from what I have seen) that probably is for the
better. People are able to be there, they have their families, they've sucked
on a nitro tablet if they had to, etc., etc.
#1 son and I took that concept to heart when we held our last awards banquet
for Exploring/Venturing. We didn't want to tell everyone what they were
getting, but we did want everyone getting an award to attend. We decided on a
letter that told the people they would be receiving an award, that they might
want to encourage friends, unit members, leaders, family to attend.
We still had a couple holdouts. One Explorer Post Advisor wasn't going to
attend, we had a professional promise he would contact the IH and I wound up
doing it instead (Police Post, we figured the chief could just order the guy
to be there -- in our dreams), which just got me into a series of phone calls
where I finally wound up speaking to the Advisor and reassuring him he was
not just receiving "another piece of paper".
I believe we had 4-6 recipients out of 25 or so awards not there in the end,
including one who had found out he was getting the DAM and somehow wound up
in the hospital the day of the awards (yup. heart.) even though he had
discussed it with me and known for a month or so at least.
