As a new Silver Beaver, I must put my two cents worth into the mix and say that the way my Council does it may need to be looked into. They keep it a secret from the ones that will be receiving the award. As this makes for a welcome surprise, it does cause some problems.
I did not expect the honor and I wish I had. My mother knew and had to come up with a lame excuse in order for her and my nephew to go to the banquet as she did her scouting as my den mother in the 60's. She wanted to see me receive the award without giving it away. My grand parents wanted to attend, but they figured that would surely give the surprise away. All the members of my Troop had no idea that I would be receiving the honor, so they did not attend the banquet.
Why was the award kept so secret? To surprise the recipient I suppose. I feel that the honor of the Silver Beaver was lost by the secret way they give it. What is the reason they give for the way they give the honor? All I know is that I wish my grand parents could have been there for me. I can guarantee that now that the honor has been given to me, I will be contacting the Council Exec and whom ever it takes to change the way we give the award.
