scouts-l Mail Archive for March of 2000: Pinewood Derby Story

In early February, I watched 400 Cub Scouts racing their cars at our District
Pinewood Derby. When it was his turn to race, each Cub Scout retrieved his
car from "the pit", staged it carefully at the starting line, cheered it as
it raced, and returned it carefully to "the pit".
In late February, Barb and I drove 85 miles to watch my first grandson
participate in his first Pinewood Derby. My grandson and the other Cub Scouts
of the pack watched as the Cubmaster and two assistants raced the cars.
I described grandson's races to my son, Bill. Bill, now 21, has his own
memories of 4 years of racing his own Pinewood cars. I asked Bill what he
thought. He said, "That doesn't sound like very much fun." I agree with him.
The newspaper story the day after our District PWD included a picture a one
of our district's Cub Scouts carefully staging his car at the starting line.
This is a memory that my grandson may never have. Sad.
