I have to disagree: while they may be "top dogs" in their pack for a few
months, but they run the risk of becoming "bored dogs" and dropping out of
the program for good. The AOL is viewed by many kids as the total end of the
line. If they don't get into Boy Scouting ASAP, they run the risk of getting
lost from the program.
Additionally, they need to have as much troop experience as possible,
including weekend camping trips, to prepare them for the rigors of being at
summer camp for a whole week.
AND the Webelos we have crossed over in recent years are usually chomping at
the bit to get into Boy Scouting to hang with the big boys and have big boy
I am sorry you have seen so much den leader burn out. Maybe this is a
symptom of pack problems or poorly trained leaders or leaders who have been
expected to do too much. I, too, have seen this happen in a few instances --
but only a few. However, adult feelings should never interfer with the needs
and wants of the boys.
