Is your troop set up along age group lines? One or two
New Scout Patrols, a series of patrols that are one, two,
and three years beyond the first year, and then some
patrols that the oldest guys hang out in?

IMHO, the show-of-hands vote might also have influenced
the voting. These young guys are very heavily swayed
by the opinion of their contemporaries. (On the plus
side, I guess that shows they're working as a team!)
Anyway, a secret ballot would have negated any "buddy
