Had out Committee meeting yesterday evening. Very productive.
I wanted to give all of you a little update on the matter of our
Advancement Chair asking for "a report from the SM on exactly what
Scouts in leadership positions have done to fulfill the responsibility
of those positons". It is interesting how a face-to-face often results
in a different scenario than what is supposed (or imagined). As it turns
out the Advancement Chair did a wonderful service to the Committee and
the Troop. What he did was create a very easy to understand form that
showed the time in Leadership positions - time in rank - and a cross
section of the Troop (segregated by Rank) As a result the Committee can
now better understand how to help the SM structure Campouts, meetings,
to better server the Troop in regards to Advancement. The reason he was
asking for specifics from the SM regarding Advancement was because he is
trying to take the "job description" and create a sort of check off list
for the the PLC and Committee. He figured it would just make it easier
for future PLCs, SPLs and SMs to determine good service vs. not so good
service in a Leadership Position. In other words, instead of an opinion
we will have a clear, understandable and level playing field by which a
young man can decide what he he is lacking and make positive adjustments
along the way. SImply put - he was creating a tool. No malicious intent
what so ever - no attempt to usurp the SM, SPL or PLCs job. He was,
instead, trying to simply support the Troop.
In the end what I learned was to not jump to conclusions, to not read
between the lines unnecessarily, and to communicate my concerns in a
positive, constructive way (as Committee Chair).
As always I sure appreciate all this List does to help me personally -
and my unit.
