The short answer is, no.
The Penn State Merit Badge Jamboree was an ambitious and grand idea of
an advisor of a new Venture Crew here in State College. Unfortunately the
first event did not actually get off of the ground and the organizers have not
pursued the idea due to a variety of reasons.
The two biggest obstacles were objections from the district advancement
chair who viewed it as a merit badge "factory" (even though it was not)
and the Crew leadership itself. They did not realize how big a project this
would be and allow a proper time line to get everything planned, organized,
and accomplished in an effective manner. The leader(s) who is very dedicated,
was also naive about a number of things (protocol, planning, etc..) AND did
not have the time himself or enough support (with the knowledge and time
to pull this huge undertaking together.
In the end (last spring), the Nittany District, and the council (Juniata
have supported it but the crew just did not have the ability to pull it
Penn State WAS very supportive. There is a huge resource of talent that
to share with our Scouts.
I thought it was a fantastic idea and stood as an advocate for them in my
the District Committee and helped to recruit merit badge sponsors. I think
unfortunate that this idea has "withered on the vine".
Perhaps it will be revived at some point in the future by a group of savvy,
Scouters who can put the event together. A project of this scope would have
1.5 to 2 years of planning to pull off in the quality manner it deserves
be expected of it) not 6 months.
I apologize if that was more information than anyone really wanted to
