scouts-l Mail Archive for February of 2000: Strike anywhere matches
Wed Feb 23 2000 - 15:30:58 CST
For the record, folks ---
Several states, counties, cities, towns, whatever form of government, passed
laws forbidding the sale of them within its limits. Logic? Apparently, if
they can strike anywhere they are a potential fire hazard. Or so the excuse
given is, its probably something closer to "it's just too danged easy for
someone to start a fire wherever they are and we want to stop that".
Don't need to believe me, when #1 son hit 11 we ran to a hardware store to
fill his brand-new waterproof match container with the correct kind of
matches, Dad planning to teach him all the "old tricks". Husband of a
co-worker worked in the store. Told me the same story as above. One day they
could buy them, the next they had to get rid of them ASAP.
There's this gas station just over the border in Kenosha, WI, however....
And a hardware store in Lodi, WI....
Apparently you have to visit some different places.
