Appealing to the wisdom of the list.
Frustrated with the lack of access to Philmont, we
decided to plan our own trip this summer.
We have looked into several of the Scout Programs
offered. The Committee almost went that route, but the kids,
chose to "roll their own program".
Most of the details for our trip are finalized. We have all our
sightseeing and tours figured out. However our hikes are still
changing every time we sit down to plan. Our first 2-3 day
hike (above 5000 ft.) is planed for somewhere near
Here in Missouri, we are starting to have quite a problem
about aggressive people on mountain bikes running us
backpackers over. They are very rude and don't care
who is going up hill (and needs to conserve energy).
They just demand the right of way saying, "they can't stop!"
While looking at: http://www.wildernet.com for NM. trails,
there are numerous warnings about sharing the trails with
people on mountain bikes!!!
Is this a problem everywhere? Can someone suggest a good
backpack hike near Colorado Springs that bans bikes?
(Maybe in the protected wilderness where no bikes allowed).
This will be our 1st hike for the trip so we want a 10-20 mile
overnight with no extreme altitude (apx 7-10K).
Then off to NM. OA Lodge 66 has some really great info on
NM, but, we are having trouble deciding WHICH hike to take
in the "Latir Peaks" area. Any favorite trails here?
Last on the trip will be Wheelers Peak (the grand finale).
I see three ways to get there... Any recommendations?
Our trip will be July 9th to July 23rd, 2000.
I doubt the list will care about details... e-mail me directly.
