J.F. "Buck" Burshears, Founder and Scoutmaster of the Koshare Indian
Dancers (Troop 232 and Explorer Post 2230) of La Junta, CO, who probably was
the recipient of just about every notable BSA award,
and many other recognitions as well, had a favorite saying about such
memorabilia when recognizing Scouts and Scouters:
"This is not an award, it is a 'license to work'"
Another veteran Scouter and Distinguished Eagle Scout, Col. John "Fuzz"
Taylor used to say:
"awards are nice, but the Scouts are the 'paydirt'.."
Thus Scouters would do well to remember that awards are certainly
given in recognition of prior contributions, but with an unwritten
expectation that they should continue with humility and dedication to
faithfully serve Scouting and youth so long as they can and to the best of
