When are Scouts considered provisional?
Months ago Troop selected summer camp for 2000. Troop of 19 Scouts
consist of mainly 11- 12 years old and about three 13 year olds, two 14
year olds and one 15 year old boy. We are NOT attending a high adventure
program. Have first year scouts that will attend a first year program
and others merit badge classes and hopefully older boys will attend the
program designed for them. The camp is about 6 - 7 hours away. We have
about 5 first time campers going away that are in the 6th grade.
Webelos will cross over in April. They were told of Troop camp dates and
location in November. Pack leadership announced THIS week that due to
families being busy during the week chosen by Troop, July 4th wk, that
ALL the Webelos have decided to attend another camp during another week
that is much closer. There are 6 - 8 Webelos going to this other camp.
They never informed the Scoutmaster of their decision but went to the
Troop committee chair for her blessing. Apparently a pack mother, Tiger
leader has done all the calling to Council and district to find out how
they can go to this other camp. She never told the Scoutmaster or
Assistants or asked for their advice.
This was announced at a Troop committee meeting where half of the voting
members were missing. None of the committee members are TRAINED. Our
Scoutmaster is Not TRAINED nor any of the Assistants. Most of the
leadership has only been involved for a year with the Troop and some
committee members are totally new. The two WebeIos leaders signed on as
committee members that night. I said they should go as provisional
campers but others felt otherwise. The current Webelos leaders / now new
Troop committee members will attend with them. This was NOT voted on but
no-one disagreed but me. The more informed vocal leaders were absent
and Scoutmaster and Assistance can't vote. We have been having much
trouble with the Pack and feel it is fueled by outside forces. This was
railed roaded through.
Troop leaders are doing their best to get trained but we have to travel
about 2 hours away to do so. We are at the tail in of our Council and
border two other Councils.
This situation here is way out of hand. Before it is all over with the
Pack will be running the show as they have much more parent
The bottom line is:
Are they provisional? And if so how do they go to camp as such? Troop
Committee chair says they are NOT because there are so many of them and
they Will Go as The Troop. I had posted something similar here yesterday
and got some good points which I shared over the phone with the Troop
Chair but her mind is made up. She says at least they are going to camp
and that is positive and I should view it as such.
AHHHHH. Am I crazy or what? Just feel it should be done by The Book.
