Here in Samoset Council, "Free badges of rank" is one of the perks
bestowed upon units attaining "Team Smiley" status. Team Smiley status
is attained by meeting four criteria:
1) Participate in the Council Popcorn sale
2) Hold a "Friends of Scouting" presentation for the parents in
3) Receive FOS donations from at least 50% of the unit's families
and reach your unit FOS goal
4) Acheive "Quality Unit" status
Benefits of belonging to "Team Smiley" include:
$5.00 per scout discount for summer camp
Free cloth badges of rank
First choice registration for summer camp
Cub Packs get a free "off season" weekend at one of the council camps
instead of the priority registration for summer camp. Troops used to
get that too, but the cut it this year. We will be spending $57 to use
a council camp next weekend. Sure would be nice if it were free.
This program has existed with varying names, requirements and perks
over at least the past 7 years. The perks seem to get less and less,
while the FOS goals seem to get more and more. We used to get a 5%
discount off all Scout Shop purchases for the unit. We miss that one
most of all.
