I would like to ADD to Ken's comments on "overly active" leaders!
It is not ONLY a problem for Webelis dens who move up into a
NEW guy patroll and keep the same leaders. Often UNTRAINED
"parents" feel that the troop program is a MESS or that the SM
is NOT doing his job - keeping meetings under his controll.
Parents may try to take over the troop VIA the committee!
Or they may begin doing the scouts "HOMEWORK" etc. Too many Parents
do NOT understand the BOY LEADER concepts! They don't want
their son to LOOK bad - or not advance as fast as he did as
a CUB etc.
I find it helps a LOT to have ALL leaders "TRAINED" - even
the full commitee - even WOOD badge if at all posible!
SMF tells the new leaders what to do - WOOD badge SHOWS
them how it all works !
Having said that - YES - I accept that Wood badge training
may still not take the OVERBEARING over protective parent
out of everyone! But it is a good start! And yes you
can be a good leader without wood badge - BSA prints a
WHOLE lot of refference material - some of it is pretty
And one last point - younger scouts are more than willing
to allow the parents to do the work for them! It really
takes a while for some of these kids to take PRIDE in the
fact they can DO IT for themselves - they can run the program!
I used to be an SPL ;)
