David Bleeker <dbleeker@FLASH.NET> wrote about a problem collection
popcorn money from a Cub parent.
Several years ago my Pack had 2 families who kept avoiding payment. In
one case the Mom had sent her son with the money to Dad's house, as Dad
was bringing the boy to the Pack meeting. Dad was in need of cash that
afternoon, so he spent it... After several months, numerous phone
calls, and a certified letter (which the delinquent Dad refused to pick
up from his PO box)and broken promises to his son, we wrote up a report
on the efforts made, and went to the police.
"Delinquent Dad's" careless money habits were already familiar to the
officer, and he immediately made a call, suggesting that Dad should set
up a payment plan to be paid at the Police Station. Was it legal? I
have no idea, but it worked! The payments were made on time (after the
first one, we gave the poor boy his prize) and the boy stayed in
Scouting for another year before football won him.
The second family lived in an adjacent town, but our officer still
called them, and was promised payment within a week. That boy had only
attended meetings for about 2 months, so we weren't surprised when he
Nobody felt happy about going to the police, but there was enough money
at stake to harm the program for all the boys.
