Sorry folks, but once again, I can't agree -
the 2d year Webelos program allows units to choose to stay with the Blue
uniform or switch to the Boy Scout uniform; one of the reasons I believe this
was done was to permit Cub units to make parents aware of the higher cost
associated w/ uniforming at the Scout level.
also, in those units which switch to the Scout uniform, the youth should
be able to wear that uniform thru his crossover and first summer camp.
Webelos go camping - agbain, there is no reason why the pack and sleeping
bag purchased for these Webelos outing should not be sufficient for the
intial Boy Scout camping experiences, to include summer camp.
Summer Camp - possibly the biggest cost increase - but this can be
presented to Cubs and parents when Webelos dens schedule their visits to
Although the majority of dens may be feeder units to only one troop, in many
areas there are several possible choices - the costs associated w/ one
program may be different in others.
THe forms and possibilities for assistance w/ the cost of these higher
expenses will also vary with many units - again, these chance can be
presented during the dens visit to the troop. Certainly if a parent is
concerned abt the costs of the program he shouldn't be too proud to ask about
potential financial assistance.
Moreover, it is unrealistic for units to explain their financial program
to potential scouts 8 month out from when they will join, for the simple fact
that things can change - and then the parent could say - "but you said we'd
be able to do ....."
Just my humble opinion, but I do feel that ample opportunities exist for
parents to get a valid idea of the differences between the programs,
including costs, long before their sons join troops.
