Scoot over Dale!
Let me on that Box!
I agree that there are a lot of differences between
the Cubbing and Scouting; some of which play influence
to the attitudes of both Scouts and their parents as
they come into the Troop1
I will no doubt get deep fried for saying it but
hold the strong feelings that Cub Scouts are "spoon
feed" too much! While I realize the need to entertain
these younger boys to keep them involved, all too
often its at the cost of "gem-me badges" for showing
up! As the young Scout moves into the Troop, its hard
to overcome their need for those expectations!
I can't even tell you how many young Scouts and/ or
their parents have come to me asking why they are not
getting any pins or badges! Yessssssssssss!!!! We do
sit down and explain the process to both the Scouts
and their parents as they come into the Troop!
The other major factor of drop out rates being so
high is cost! Each year, we have "new boys" come into
the Troop, excited about the program and expectations
of all the things they have not yet been able to do!
Then we find out that the Pack did next to nothing to
explain the costs of Scouting as well as the
opportunity for assistance with the cost! And all too
often, any fund raiser have gone toward the Pack
operations with little transfer to the Troop to off
set the cost of Summer Camp. Gee, thats only 4-5
months away and we just hit up the parents for dues
and registration, not to mention uniforms, sleeping
bags and other personal gear!
We have started to increase our education of the Packs
in our area. We are also meeting with parents of
Webelos Scouts two or three times within the last 6
months prior to entry into the Troop. Hope is that it
will all pay off! I am also requiring parents to make
more of a effort to influence parents to raise the
money through the fund raisers, planning for Summer
Camp as the Fall School year starts!
If we can educate, it may cut down on DROP OUTS!
Keep Scouting Fun!
