Our Pack Committee has made a determination that we need to establish
by-laws (policies?) for our Pack. We have been in existence for over 30
years, and as far as I know, there are no (nor have there ever been) by-laws
for our Pack. I could be mistaken on this since we had a major change over
of leadership here a couple of years back. But in talking with the previous
CC, CM, and the current IH, no one remembers ever having by-laws.
Now I will expose my ignorance. I am not even sure what advantages by-laws
would provide for our Pack. We operate our Pack through the Parent
Committee, led by the CC, and keep the IH and COR well informed on what is
going on, and ask for their participation as much as possible (but doesn't
happen unless a major crisis rears its head, but that's another story from a
few years back).
So once again I resort to the wisdom of this group. Could someone please
explain to me the advantages/disadvantages of having formal by-laws for a
Cub Scout Pack?
Also, rather than re-inventing the wheel, would it be possible to get copies
of by-laws from other Packs out there sent to me, that we can review and
modify if necessary, to help us in establishing our by-laws? If you are
able to send them electronically, a private e-mail would be extremely
appreciated. If you only have hard copies, I can provide you with my
mailing address and a SASE if you would be willing to share them with our
Thanks again for all of the support that this group constantly provides to
the scouting program.
