scouts-l Mail Archive for February of 2000: volunteering for National Jambo
Sat Feb 12 2000 - 12:18:06 CST
First, your council service center should have applications for staff. The
youth and adult apps are the same. If they don't have any on hand, make them
send for some pronto. Make out your application, get them to sign it and send
it in. You will receive a yellow postcard from National acknowledging receipt
of your app, and sometime later will receive an appointment letter with a
contract to sign and send back to the service you are working for, for
example, Physical Arrangements Group (the fabulous plumbers), Health and
Safety, a region, a subcamp, or..... any of a zillion things.
The site will hold about 6000 staff and 30,000 youth, plus a lot of day
visitors, and runs like a small city. They need everything a small city has,
except perhaps an obstetrician <G> or a funeral director (though yes, we did
have 2 youth killed last time in a humvee rollover; no, they weren't supposed
to be driving it). There is a post office, waterfront, hospitality, food
service, trading posts, merit badge midway, fishing, fire station,
security/police, insurance, registration, transportation, lost & found,
chaplains, arena shows, trash & portapotties, telephone & electrical & water,
I can't think what all else. You'll be busy, hot & sweaty, and have a ball.
"Volunteering" may not be exactly the right term <G>--- staff has to pay to
go to Jambo just as the participants do. Adult staff fee is $495, youth staff
(16-21) is $245. You get your first staff patch when they get your initial
deposit ($100 for adult, $50 for youth)... I have the first one in my
council! (because Health and Safety ROCKS!)
You can also join the group on the Jambo listserve, and speak with many past
and future staffers, get good ideas about where you might want to work, what
to bring to improve quality of residential life at Fort AP Hill <G>, how to
oder a way-cool hat pin, and more!
Post to <Jambo01@dynapolis.com> or contact the listowner, the redoubtable
Doug Gentry, <Doug@dynapolis.com>.
