Guess I'll take this opportunity to make my Howdy.
I'm Brad Bailey, now in No. Virginia and preparing to cross-over a den
of 5th grade Webelos Scouts this month. I am one of those volunteers that
give back to Scouting what I got while growing up in the Denver Area
Council. Pack 174 & Troop 154 & Lodge 383 were my stomping grounds in my
attaining Eagle & Brotherhood. Military service limited my BSA exposure,
but upon retiring & son's desire to be a Tiger Cub, brought me *QUICKLY*
The one-full year Webelos Scout Program using the plaid neckerchief &
Activity Badges was adopted in 1967. Due to preparations & getting
material, the Pack was to start on 1 Jan 68. Also, at that time, the Cub
Scout Trail was based upon age & not school grade level. Thus a boy became
a Webelos Scout at 10-1/2, after having 6 months to work on his Lion Award.
I feel into the situation of having 2 months to earn Lion before diving
into this new Webelos Scout Program of 15 Activity Badges. By the time I
turned 11 in October (age to join Boy Scouts & no age discounts for Arrow of
Light), I was devoted & inspired enough get the Lion & earn all 15 Activity
And now they need 2-years to do 20 - guess that comes from the other
activities that boys get in to these days.
There's my wooden nickel - looking forward to the ideas & discussions that
will help me in my upcoming Scouter years.
