No, I didn't fall off the Giant Snow Slide here in the St.Paul area; I've
been really busy covering it, as well as talking with some Scouts and
Scouters out at the Winter Carnival this past weekend and working on some
projects for work!! With two bosses and a load of "here's what we want you
to do next," I've been literally overwhelmed...not to mention that "surprise
diagnostic PT test" that I wasn't ready for (mentally nor physically!)
yesterday! I'm STILL in pain from it!
During the evening tomorrow, I will post (one a day) a series of op-ed
pieces for the local papers here. I'm sending them to the local press
tomorrow, which is why I can't post them tonight (and besides, I'm tired and
it's truly been a long day...and with still close to 500 emails to read and
file this evening....) There's seven in the series; I will only post six
here to Scouts-L and Embers.
You may send them to your local paper if you like; or you may use them
during Blue and Golds or other events. I had originally planned to post one
a day between the start of this week (Scouting's 90th anniversary week) but
events overcame themselves and I wasn't able to.
If you send them to a local paper, *please, please, please* add the
following lines onto the end so that the proper "credit" is given: (my
name's already on it but that's not important....)
"Obtained through the Scouts-L youth programs discussion electronic mailing
list, and shared by permission of the author and by the listowner of the
Scouts-L youth programs discussion electronic mailing list. Further
distribution is permitted as long as this same statement is added."
ONE of the postings has a word within it which is NOT suitable for this
list; I have decided NOT to post it here but rather to post it to The Tree
(website address below in signature) with suitable disclaimers during the
evening tomorrow (Wednesday). PLEASE do not ask me to send it via email to
you; if you want it, you'll have to go through the website and read the
disclaimer and download it (it's NOT that bad, folks....but in total
abayance to my wife, whom does not like me nor anyone else using *that
word*, I have agreed to post it in that way only. This same word appears
in several other excerpts from "Patches and Pins" and "Eagle Feathers" with
the same disclaimer applied.)
I trust that you will find these op-ed pieces what you will need to carry
the Scouting torch forward over the next years; I hope that it challenges
your parents and youth to stop thinking about Scouting as a "child care
program" and rather as a "game with a purpose;" and I trust that you will
find a need for such reflection sometime during this month of celebrating
just how long Scouting in the United States has come...and how far further
we need to take it.
Again, I apologize to those like Patty whom have sent me private postings;
I've reviewing all of my email this evening and will respond to those before
my head hit the pillow. In the meantime, I will be back Wednesday evening
up late to post these as well as to read in detail the many postings from
Hope it all helps out!
