I, like several others, have been monitoring the discussions for a
little while and it's finally time to introduce myself.
13 years ago, my then 7 year old son came home and said he wanted to
join Cub Scouts. Not ever having been involved as a youth, I made my
first mistake and I said I'd help. Den Leader came at sign up night;
Cub Master two years later. Another two years went by and the DE said
he'd like me to help more boys than just those in the Pack. Then he
mentioned that he had an "immediate opening." Second mistake. The next
week he had the District Nominating Committee propose me as District
Chairman (the prior fellow did actually have a family crises and had
to back out.) Three years later I finally recruited a successor and
moved over to District Commissioner and have been trying to build the
Commissioner ranks since. Roger Borth, that original DE who's still a
good friend but since retired to the hills of North Carolina, keeps
telling me "everybody has to have a hobby", so it looks like
Scouting's mine. In a nutshell, it's probably a familiar story.
Home base is Sleeping Giant District - Southington, Meriden,
Wallingford, Hamden and North Haven, CT - one of six districts in the
Connecticut Yankee Council. We have 64 units, just over 3,000
traditional Cubs and Boy Scouts and I find myself happily surrounded
by an incredible amount of energy.
Like most, I've had my fingers in all areas of the district and have
had fun working on several council wide activities. With this
experience, I hope I can be helpful to this group and will gladly talk
direct with anyone.
