I've seen a couple of requests lately for sleds or snowshoes made from
A word of warning: In extremely cold weather, like we sometimes get
here in upstate NY, plain old PVC can be very brittle. I've seen snow-
shoes made from this material shatter instead of flexing.
(This is why the Native Americans in this area used natural materials
in their snowshoes, instead of going down to the longhouse-improvement
center and buying PVC.)
I don't know how cold it has to get before this is a problem, or whether
some of the many formulations other than PVC avoid this problem, but I
do know that I saw some pretty disappointed Scouts when instead of
participating in the homemade snowshoe race they carried their snow-
shoes home in a bucket.
