My two cents on the single-parent dilema:
Since most of the single parents are mothers, the most frequent excuse I hear
from them for not putting their sons in scouting is the lack of a FATHER to
take him. Part of the solution then would be to work on the mistaken notion
held by many folks that Scouting is exclusively a dad/son activity. Word
needs to get to moms that this is not the case and women are (or should be)
welcome volunteers and that their sons will benefit greatly from the program
no matter what the makeup of the family.
Sad when you think about it -- who needs the influence of the wonderful
gentleman involved in scouting more than a kid without a dad around?
