sometimes we are very quick to jump to the conclusion that BSA's reason
for something is strictly financial - i.e. more Boy's Life subscriptions
means more money for national. Perhaps we should look for other
explanations of these changes when they come up. In the case of
encouraging 100% Boy's Life as an optional qualification for Quality
Unit, I suspect that it might have to do with the BSA's commitment to
improving literacy by getting reading material into the hands of the
youth involved in the program.
It bothers me that we some of the volunteers on the list always assume
that national has some devious money-grubbing motive for everything it
does. I've met a lot of higher level BSA professionals including a
couple of Chief Scout Executives, and have yet to notice horns or a tail
on any of them. Virtually all of the "top" guys are nice guys committed
to delivering the promise to youth IMO.
Let's give national the benefit of the doubt occasionally.
