I saw the same blurb in Scouting that Dale references,
and my first thoughts were YIKES! & WHY? Then, I
recalled that the percentage of Boys Life
subscriptions was but one of several optional
requirements that could be met, and not a mandatory
one (which I certainly hope remains the case.)
We run well over the 50% level in my pack, and in some
cases we have multiple copies going into a home
because either each lad really wanted their own copy,
the parents didn't want to hear squabbles or some
other reason. We do suggest and encourage Boys Life
as a good idea, but we don't have 100% participation
because we have never required the magazine.
I won't suggest we switch to requiring it now to be
able to keep meeting this particular optional Quality
Unit requirement. Our pack will simply shoot to meet
the requirements without this option. Some of our
families make hard choices on their finances every
month of every year.
I'm not going to add to that stress just to hang onto
an optional requirement we have always met in the
past, not when their sons can read Boys Life in the
school or public library and our pack can continue to
shoot for its Quality Unit designation in another
