Why do Scouts leave?

The Membership Inventory procedure included in the Charter Renewal packets,
while obviously designed to reregister both active and inactive scouts,
would provide an opportunity to survey the reasons why scouts leave, if the
recruiting effort fails. My worst moment so far as a SM happened when we
experienced the first drop-out from our new troop. <Why would anyone want
to drop out of Scouts? especially Troop 6!> was the question running through
my mind. Since then the inevitable has happened; more drop-outs, for all
kinds of reasons, some good and out of our control, some lame, and some that
need our attention. A scientific, national survey could be useful, perhaps;
but, the local unit is best suited to ask the questions, and respond to the
findings. Ultimately, it's the local unit program, members, leaders and
personal motivation of the wavering scout that will retain him.
