(MAJ) Mike Walton (settummanque, the blackeagle) has brought up an issue
that we covered a few months ago regarding the cost of uniforms.
He wrote"the BSA's jac-shirt is $70.00 and they are offering to make
these for $40.00". Now I understand that National has many overhead
expenses they have to deal with, but isn't charging almost a 100%
increase for one item seems very high? The blue jac-shirt MAY also be a
special order item which usually cost more than a regular item. I'm sure
that National orders more than 2000 per year, which may bring the cost
down even more.
The only explanation that I can come up with is that the blue ones would
be made from a different material (although 100% wool is hard to
If National does this with all of the items in the catalog, they should
have a surplus income close to some Fortune 500 companies.
Mike, I want to commend you on taking on this task. This "game" we play
is due much inpart because of people like you that feel strongly about
an issue and struggle for years to see it through.
Now I don't want to start another discussion about Pro's retirement
monies or other expenses that are covered by the profit made on
uniforms, just interested to see if anyone else feels that the mark-up
is a bit to high. Also, is this the only item that has such an increase,
and if so WHY?
Just some questions to those that know more about these things than I
