I replied to one email discussing the uneven competition between
Councils and units for fund raising. Your response included a lot about
a unit's assets, especially on disestablishemnt. I did not address that
topic or intend to do so.
I did not say that a unit could not receive deductible contributions. I
said that it was not economically advantageous to attempt to receive an
IRS determination letter. I have heard twice from this list in recent
years that the IRS assumes that the donations that most of us make to
Scouting units are deductible.
The organizations that this thread seemed to be discussing require a 501
determination. The character of their donation is important to them.

These are the organizations that Councils target with the bulk of their
FOS efforts. I submit that we as a whole do better with Council
professionals targeting businesses in the Community and units addressing
their own needs and leaving business interests alone. There are some
places where the great unit or individual could do better, but not as a
