Scouts-L Mail Archive for December of 1999: Gotta Boast!..numbers

All this talk about Ed's web site and the numbers of scouting made me
scratch my head. I had the feeling that somehow, our district and council
must be an exception to the dire projections for the future of scouting
that seem to be "in the air". So....yesterday I checked our numbers. Let
me preface this by saying that I knew that we had started two new troops in
our district in the past two years...and I believe that we've started at
least one, if not two new packs. I also knew that most of the troops I
talk with at Roundtable report that they are enjoying what is called
"modest growth" and some troops (including mine) need to send incoming
Webelos to other troops. For instance, we have received visits for the
past two months and have taken in 22 new scouts and are now "closed".
SO, to make a long story short, I saw our former DE yesterday at the
hardware store. He now is a council commissioner. He reported that our
district enjoyed a 10% growth this year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unheard of!.... and
probably something like a national record! I'm calling council today to
see what our percentage of available youth served is.
Had to boast! How about other districts our there?...how are you doing?
Oh yes, I know this is all "anechdotal" but perhaps a lot of "anechdotals"
add up to some "real" numbers........?
BLUE SKIES!, Any day above ground is a good day!
