I, too, enjoyed looking at Ed's site. He provides much food for thought.
The graphs, at first glance, seem to be very telling. But further thought
makes me wonder how much good they really are in their current form.
As others have already pointed out, they seem to be echoing the ebb and
flow of the baby boom. For the graphs to be really useful I feel they need
to show some type of baseline. I propose that the appropriate baseline
would be the total available youth at the time.
Thus, a useful chart would have one line showing Scouting membership (with
all its ups and downs) and another line would show how many youth were
eligible to participate in Scouting in the U.S. at that time. Readers
would be able to compare the troughs and peaks of each to get a truly
accurate picture of the face of Scouting over time.
