Troop 405 is still looking for a Troop or Venturing Crew to accompany us
on a canoeing trip in Canada next year. Additional information follows.
If, by January 17th, we aren't able to find a group to fill this crew,
we plan to cancel it.
Calvin H. Gray
Scoutmaster, Troop 405=09
I used to be an Owl (WM-62-2-98 @ Philmont)
Troop 405=92s high adventure trip for the summer of 2000 (departing
Georgetown, Texas, on July 20 or 21 and returning on August 1 or August
2) will be a canoeing trip arranged through the Tinnerman Canoe Base in
Canada. Passports are not required. The Tinnerman Base is operated by
the Greater Cleveland Council in Ohio. =20
To see the location of the Tinnerman Base, see:
We have four crews reserved, including one crew of up to 11 people that
we have not been able to fill from within our troop. =20
A Tinnerman crew must have at least 8 members and no more than 11. Each
crew must be made up of a majority of youth members. In other words, a
8 or 9 person crew would need at least 5 youth members and a 10 or 11
person crew would need at least 6 youth members. Of course, each crew
must have at least 2 adults.
To take part in this adventure, Scouts or Venturers will need to be at
least age 13 by January 1, 2000. Each youth participant must be able to
pass the BSA Swim Text. Adult participants classified as non-swimmers
will be able to attend as long as the other person in the canoe is
classified as a Swimmer, and the non-swimmer wears a PFD at all times
while on or near the water. =20
Since most of this adventure will be =93river canoeing=94 there will be a
minimum amount of portaging (carrying the canoes and equipment)=20
required, thus making physical size less important than with =93lake
canoeing=94 trips which require extensive portaging between lakes.
The estimated cost of this trip is $700 per person. This includes the
fee charged by the Tinnerman Base, transportation by Motorcoach and
meals during the trip to and from Canada. =20
All members of the group will be expected to ride the Motorcoach to and
from Canada. The group will depart from Georgetown, Texas, about 25
miles north of Austin. If practical, the Motorcoach could possibly pick
up the 4th crew along the way to Canada as long as a lengthly detour
If your Troop or Venturing Crew is interested in filling our 4th crew
for this trip, please let me know by e-mail or by phone at 512-863-9040.
I will assign the crew to the first Troop or Venturing Crew that
contacts me with a firm commitment to provide at least eight (8) crew
members including at least two (2) adults. A $125 per crew member
payment will be due by January 31.
