Scouts-L Mail Archive for December of 1999: knot remembering

My favorite out-of-Scouting-context knot story occurred when I was taking my
daughter on the obligatory round of "college shopping" in the spring of her
junior year. We sat in on a theater arts class, the head of the department
teaching knots for theatrical rigging to a class of 20 majors. It became
obvious in a hurry that she could use some help, so I volunteered, and for
the next hour we did bowlines, clove hitches, and trucker's hitches. At the
end I showed her my personal favorite knot, the tautline hitch, which she
adopted immediately; at that point she noticed a boy in the back helping his
table with that one. She said, "How do you know all this stuff?" and he and I
replied in unison, "Boy Scouts."
My daughter is now a theater & physics major at that school <G>.
