I have. Besides my own, I have been present during a Troop meeting of a
Troop in Louisville, Kentucky. The Scoutmaster is a participant on this
forum (Dr. Stan, you want to reintroduce yourself and explain how your LARGE
Troop (well over 100 youth members!) operates please?).
Believe me when I tell you that the 25 or so adults all corrall into a
separate room, and unless they are requested or needed by the youth Senior
Patrol Leader or the other officers of that Troop, that's where they meet,
talk and drink coffee at at the meeting place. The ONLY time that Scouts
see the Scoutmaster is during the first ten minutes and the last ten minutes
(unless they are doing a Scoutmasters' Conference, and then many times it's
Stan's Assistant Scoutmasters that are doing those conferences).
The Troop was highlighted in the BSA's _Scouting_ Magazine as a positive
example of a large Troop utilizing the Patrol Method. Have Dr. Stan to
invite you to any Troop meeting....it's the same way no matter when you show up!
(Dr. Stan's unit is one of many....Dr. Steve here also managed a youth-run
Troop, and had many of the same doubts that you and others had before trying
it....there are other Scoutmasters out here with successful youth-run units!)
It *can be done*, Pat. Don't let the "title" Scoutmaster make you or others
feel that you are the "leader of the Troop". You're not. Your and my old
job was to coach and assist and train those leaders of your Troop to run and
manage THEIR TROOP.
We are just like our Venturing counterparts: we're advisors to those whom
lead the unit.
