Have you told him what you told us?
Some other ideas:
Give him extra support: "I _know_ you can do this"
Don't push too much, at this age they tend to dig in their heels if adults
push too much.
What does he want to do with his life? Is there someone in his chosen
field who can encourage him and show him that these skills would be useful?
Can you help him find a project that fits with his talents & interests?
Perhaps part of the problem is that the projects he's looked into dont
