Dave and fellow Scouters,
> BSA rank insignias protected by copyright laws? If so to what extent?
> Specifically, can the Eagle rank or medal be reproduce on a cake for a Eagle
While I'm not a lawyer, I have a little experience with copyright from
the days when I ran my own fiber design business. It's my understanding
that BSA owns the rights to all it's insignia, logos, etc. But, as
volunteers for that organization, we can use these in conjunction with
the BSA program. Think of all the B&G banquet programs we do,
reproduction of the Woodbadge logo on webpages, etc. Therefore, I see
no problem reproducing the Eagle rank/medal on a cake for a COH since it
is a recognition of an honor earned and awarded within the BSA program.
As a matter of fact, we do it all the time and even have several bakers
in the area 'trained' to do the logo!
