Klondike Derby Sleds modifications

It's that time of year for making/repairing those Klondike Sleds. We made
sleds in our Webelos Den last year from the plans available on the Web.
These are for the traditional sleds. IMHO, the sled is too LONG and HEAVY
(just ask my WEbeloss who dragged it around all day with NO SNOW!). I
would, in hind sight, use shorter skis (outgrown kid skis) for the
runners, not long adult skis. We are contemplating cutting the whole
thing in half for this year. We used 1 by lumber (1x4 Ithink or 1x 6)
which is heavy. The skis are heavy. This means modifying (drawing your
What Merit Badge can we work Klondike Sled building into?
Does anyone have plans for modifications that they found that worked well.
Most of the sleds we saw were around 4 feet long, some PVC, some pipe weld
(hmmmm....sounds like a dad sled!). I'm looking for Scout-doable projects
that won't take more than a meeting or Saturday morning to put together.
